About Italian Language Lessons at the AICC

The American Italian Cultural Center (AICC) Italian Language Lessons are offered in four different levels carefully designed on the basis of the European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Classes have a friendly and motivating atmosphere. If you are unsure of your course level, please call the AICC at 504-522-7294

Courses are held at the American Italian Cultural Center located at 537 S Peters St in Downtown New Orleans, LA and at the Italian American Bocce Club of Greater New Orleans located at 2340 Severn Avenue, Metairie. Goal: Development of basic language and communication skills in Italian

Tentatively, the following topics will be covered: alphabet and sounds, common greetings and polite expressions, numbers, days of the week and months of the year, giving and understanding basic directions, ordering food and beverages, making reservations by phone, understanding basic forms, elementary conversation,basic grammar, including plural formation, gender, noun and adjective agreement, personal pronouns, conjugation of common verbs in the present tense. PreA1 to A1 of the European Framework.

(Introduction to the Italian Language Part II)

Goal: Further development of basic communication skills in Italian

Tentatively, the following topics will be covered: possessive adjectives. direct and indirect object pronouns, telling time, articulated prepositions, 1st-2nd-3rd regular verb conjugations in the present tense, one form of past tense(il passato prossimo), practice dialogues; covering everyday situations. Level: Progression from A1 to A2 of the European Framework.

Meet the Teacher: Andrea Saunders-Basili

Born in New Orleans, LA, Andrea earned her Bachelor’s degree in Foreign Languages (French, German and Italian) from LSU in Baton Rouge, LA.

She moved to Rome to attend La Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori interpreting school. Andrea studied translation theory and simultaneous/consecutive interpreting from Italian to English, French and German. Since 1994, she has been working as a professional interpreter, translator, and instructor. She is  also an official Italian government interpreter and translator for the Italian Court and Judicial System. From 2005, she worked as a full-time interpreter and translator at the Centro di Permanenza per I Rimpatri government facility in Rome working on the front lines of immigration, for the Italian Red Cross, among other managing entities, and for Rome Police Headquarter officials. Andrea has taught bilingual Italian-English literacy courses and Italian classes to refugees, ESL classes, and English classes to Italian police officials.

Andrea is also proficient in Russian, has studied ancient Hebrew in the Italian university system and is a certified intercultural linguistic mediator for the Region of Latium.

She is eager to share her great love for the Italian language and culture, cultivated not only through her 26 years in Italy, but also from her own Italian American heritage.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
