ABOUT AICC CLASSES

The American Italian Cultural Center (AICC) Italian Language Lessons are offered in three different levels carefully designed on the basis of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) national proficiency scale.

Courses are held at the American Italian Cultural Center located at 537 S Peters St in Downtown New Orleans, LA and at the Italian American Bocce Club of Greater New Orleans located at 2340 Severn Avenue, Metairie. Each class will include a total of eight 1.5 hour sessions. 

All courses use the following textbook: Prego! An Invitation to Italian by Graziana Lazzarino. It is available to purchase for $75.00.

Meet the Teacher: Andrea Saunders-Basili

Born in New Orleans, LA, Andrea earned her Bachelor’s degree in Foreign Languages (French, German and Italian) from LSU in Baton Rouge, LA.

She moved to Rome to attend La Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori interpreting school. Andrea studied translation theory and simultaneous/consecutive interpreting from Italian to English, French and German. Since 1994, she has been working as a professional interpreter, translator, and instructor. She is  also an official Italian government interpreter and translator for the Italian Court and Judicial System. From 2005, she worked as a full-time interpreter and translator at the Centro di Permanenza per I Rimpatri government facility in Rome working on the front lines of immigration, for the Italian Red Cross, among other managing entities, and for Rome Police Headquarter officials. Andrea has taught bilingual Italian-English literacy courses and Italian classes to refugees, ESL classes, and English classes to Italian police officials.

Andrea is also proficient in Russian, has studied ancient Hebrew in the Italian university system and is a certified intercultural linguistic mediator for the Region of Latium.

She is eager to share her great love for the Italian language and culture, cultivated not only through her 26 years in Italy, but also from her own Italian American heritage.

NOVICE CLASSES

Students will develop basic language skills and a general understanding of how to communicate in Italian. Upon course completion, students will be able to speak in present tense and be able to read and write basic sentences. Proficiency goal on the ACTFL scale: Novice High. No prerequisite.

Mondays (6:00 – 7:30 pm) at the AICC, class runs July 15 through September 9. No class 9/2 for Labor Day

Tuesdays (7:30 – 9:00 pm) at the Bocce Club, class runs July 16 – September 3.

Wednesdays (10:30 – noon) at the AICC, class runs July 17 – September 4.

INTERMEDIATE CLASSES

Students will continue to build upon their knowledge and skill of the language and learn more vocabulary and grammar so they will be able to speak more about basic everyday situations. Students will also be using past tense. Proficiency goal on the ACTFL scale: Intermediate Low.

Mondays (7:30 – 9:00 pm) at the AICC, class runs July 15 through September 9. No class 9/2 for Labor Day

Tuesdays (6:00 – 7:30 pm) at the Bocce Club, class runs July 16 through September 3.

Thursdays (10:30 – noon) at the AICC, class runs July 18 through September 5.

ADVANCED CLASSES

These classes are recommended for students who have completed the novice and intermediate Italian courses and are approaching a conversational level. Students will increase their proficiency and will be able to speak about basic situations using present, past and future tenses. Proficiency on the ACTFL scale: from Intermediate High to Advanced Low.

Mondays (4:30 – 6:00 pm) at the AICC, class runs July 15 though September 9. No class 9/2 for Labor Day

Thursdays (6:00 – 7:30 pm) at the Bocce Club, class runs July 18 through September 5.

Fridays (10:30 – noon) at the AICC, class runs July 19 through September 6.

PRICING

$200 AICC Members/$250 Non-Members 

Non-members receive a membership to the American Italian Cultural Center (valid from purchase date through December 31, 2019).

The American Italian Cultural Center is unable to offer pro-rating on courses.

REFUND POLICY

Students who cancel their registration up to three days before the first class will receive a 75% refund. There will be a 50% refund if student cancels after the first class and before the second class. No refunds will be given after the second class. There will be a full refund if the AICC cancels the entire class schedule. Requests must be submitted by email to questions@americanitalianculturalcenter.com.
